English Vocabulary Words
Learn 10 new English words a day
Choose two languages, a level and a way to practise. The app shows you a word, you answer, and it tells you straight away whether you were right. It is free at present, there is nothing to sign up for, and your saved progress stays in your browser.
Open the appIt opens on the home page, where you pick your languages and start a round.
What is in it
-
73 languages, any two of them
English with Spanish, Arabic, Hindi, Kazakh and sixty-eight more — or two of the others straight against each other, Français with Español, with no English in between. A word is asked in one and answered in the other, in either direction or both.
-
Three ways to answer
Multiple choice, where you tap one of the answers; Type the answer, where you write it yourself and small slips are forgiven; or Flashcards, where you turn the card over and say whether you knew it.
-
Three levels
Level 1 is everyday words, level 3 the hardest. A round is ten words to begin with; the settings make it five, twenty or fifty, with or without a clock.
-
Hear every word
Tap the word being asked and your device reads it aloud. Every word on every list can be heard the same way, in the voice your browser or device has for that language — so your browser or device provider may process the spoken word.
-
Lists of your own
Star a word and it goes into your favourites, to practise on their own. A words-to-improve list, once you switch it on in the settings, collects what you got wrong and lets a word go after two right answers in a row. And under My words you can add words of your own and practise those.
-
Your progress
How many rounds you have played, how you did, and which words gave you the most trouble — kept for each pair of languages separately, on your device.
-
Listen, or play
Advanced Learning reads word pairs aloud one after another, with nothing to answer. Five Games — a space shooter, a shooting range, a bat-and-ball wall, a snake in a garden and checkers against the computer — each stop every so often to ask you a word from the pair and level you chose.
-
Keep it on your device
Add an icon for the app to your phone or computer from the home screen's Install app on this device control, and open it like any other app. It still needs a connection.
How it starts
- Choose your languages. The app opens on the ones your browser announces, and Change Languages at the top of the home screen offers every one of the 73 — search by name in English or in the language itself.
- Choose how to practise. Which way round the words are asked, and whether you would rather choose, type or turn a card.
- Press Start Learning Now. The round begins, at the level named on the button — that level, and much else, is chosen on the Customize screen. The line under that button says that pressing it is your agreement to the terms of use; the agreement is kept on your device and never sent, so you are not asked again.
Before you rely on a word
The translations were generated by artificial intelligence, and they can be wrong. The English words are the operator's own list; no person has proofread, edited or linguistically reviewed what those words became in the other 72 languages. For anything that matters — an exam, a document, a conversation you cannot get wrong — check the word in another source too. The disclaimer says the whole of it, and the questions page answers the rest in plain English: what is saved on your device, what your browser sends to the site, and who is responsible for what.
